Der Wiederaufbau von Afghanistan und die rezentralisierung der politischen Macht gehen langsam voran, unterstützt von den USA und den UN-Friedenstruppen. After years of turmoil and civil war which costed the life of one million people, the country is emerging as a model example of successful development on the African continent. Bhutan is still a very remote state in the Himalayas, and has only recently started a cautious process of modernisation and opening up to the world. However, it is far from being Shangri-La. In the process of political modernisation, it struggles to mold a system merging traditional elements with a modern democratic society. Central- and Eastern Europe was the focus of my attention during the late 1980s and 1990s. The events leading up to the breaking up of the last empire were a fascinating backdrop for my studies of political science. Both my master and doctoral thesis try to explain what happened and why. As the country where I was born it, it remains of continuous interest for me. Even if - from an international perspective - Austria remains a neglectable force, its political micro-cosmos mirrows larger tendencies and trends.
