Public signs

Bhutan is creative in using signs to educate the public. In early 2001, I collected collected few of the more outstanding signs.

"Thanks. Travelling not only broadens one's mind but also widens human sympathies."

This sign was found on the road to the mountain pass Dochu La, just after a road construction site

"Littering is sin"

A very clear message, combining moral threats with highly practical desires. Found at the campus of the Royal Institute of Management.

"Think like a man of action and act like a man of thought"

The dustbins of the Royal Institute of Management proved a worthwile subject of philosophic investigation.

Attention, sharp curve

Not really funny per se as a sign, but hilarious in the Bhutanese context. Since the Lateral Highway, linking Eastern and Western Bhutan, consists of nothing but curves and bends, it puzzles the tired traveller to encounter - once in a while, and without apparent logic - singns warning of a particular bend. How these special bends are identified, remains a mystery. Found somewhere on the way to Phunaka.
